The Free Disposal Program Worth Planning Around

CSFD's neighborhood chipping program is the best deal in Colorado Springs fire mitigation: homeowners in 143 Wildland-Urban Interface neighborhoods cut and stack their slash curbside, and the fire department chips and removes it free during fixed two-week regional windows. In the 2025 season the program serviced 5,429 homes and removed 1,474 tons of biomass. The catch: the dates are fixed, registration closes a week ahead, and a pile stacked wrong or late just sits there — dry, curing fuel leaned against your property line.

That is the piece we manage. Book fire mitigation work — oak clearing, thinning, pruning — and we schedule the cutting so slash hits the curb stacked to spec, just ahead of your region's window.

Stacking to Spec — So the Chipper Takes Everything

The chipping crews move fast, and a pile that fights them gets left. The spec is simple and we build every pile to it: curbside, clear of parked cars, mailboxes, hydrants and low wires; cut ends toward the street so branches feed straight into the drum without re-handling; manageable lengths rather than whole trees; brush only — no lumber, no rootballs, no bagged leaves, no wire or nails hiding in the stack. Register your address the week before, then leave the pile alone until the chipper comes through.

Stack it right and 2025's numbers are what free looks like: 1,474 tons of fuel chipped out of 5,429 properties at zero disposal cost to the homeowners who met their window.

Chipping & Slash Questions

How do I sign up for CSFD's free chipping?

Register at coswildfireready.org, call (719) 385-7493, or email the CSFD Wildfire Mitigation Section - at least one week before your region's date. The program serves the 143 designated WUI neighborhoods only.

How should slash be stacked for the chipper?

Curbside, cut ends facing the street, in manageable piles clear of vehicles, mailboxes and utilities - so the crew can feed the chipper without re-handling your pile. We cut and stack to spec as part of every job.

What if I missed my neighborhood's chipping week?

Round two runs August through October for every region - and if both windows have passed or you're outside the WUI list, we quote private chipping or haul-off. Don't let a stacked pile sit against the house through fire season.

Does CSFD chip everything?

The program chips branches and brush - it is disposal for mitigation work, not tree removal. Large trunks, stumps, rootballs and construction wood are private haul-off, which we include in the estimate when the job creates them.
